Putting the Care in Health Care: Teaching Empathy Through Connection & Collaboration

Jessie Wirkus Haynes (she/her) is Assistant Professor of English at Bellin College, specializing in composition, narrative medicine, and DEI work for healthcare students. Her teaching, research, scholarship, and community service focus on collaborative ways to empower students and foster social change through language and the act of writing.

Mary Roffers (she/her) is an academic administrative assistant at Bellin College and a graduate student at Rutgers-Camden in the Master of Arts Liberal Studies Program. In her current role at Bellin College, she is committed to serving as a resource for DEI&J and strives to be an advocate for social justice while supporting and participating in initiatives that aim to dismantle oppressive structures and promote equity for all. As a graduate student, she has focused her classwork and research on cultural studies – specifically American, fat, and food studies. She has also utilized this opportunity to call attention to biased, stigmatizing, prejudicial, and harmful language and actions and the inequities faced by marginalized populations.
