Jakita Fleck (they/them), a second-year undergraduate at Marquette University, is enrolled as a writing-intensive English major and also wading their way through minors in Communications Studies and Music. They write: “Writing has etched itself into every part of my life–my free time, my schoolwork, and how I relate to the world around me. I am so aware of tone, and my voice, and how I say things, and every other variable that goes into using words, which can be so powerful. We as humans always laugh and joke around when our friends and loved ones accidentally misspeak, and though I don’t take it personally, I take it seriously. It’s so important to me that I come across to others as articulate and thoughtful, especially to the people who matter most to me.” They add: “A shout out to Dr. Jenn Fishman, my writing professor this semester, who encouraged myself and my classmates to submit our work to the symposium, and a shout out to my best friend of over 6 years for testing my links.”
